Blastocystis homins is a type of microscopic organisms being ingested by humans in contaminated food and appears in stool. It can also be found in healthy people.
Symptoms
Symptoms of this disease include:
- Watery diarrhea
- Pain in abdomen
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Bloating
- Flatulence
- Reduced appetite
Causes
Blastocystis homins is single celled parasite that normally habitat in the gastrointestinal tract mostly without any symptoms. Sometimes it can invade the tract and cause gastrointestinal/digestive symptoms.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of this condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of patient. Other tests and investigations include the following:
- Stool examination
- Blood tests
- Endoscopy
Treatment
Treatment is done by:
- If organisms is present without any symptoms no treatment is required and it’s usually self-limiting.
- However if the condition is producing symptoms some medications can be prescribed like Antibiotics, such as metronidazole (Flagyl) or tinidazole (Tindamax), Anti-protozoal medications, such as paromomycin or nitazoxanide (Alinia).
