Aortic Stenosis
Aortic Valve Stenosis
This condition occur due to the thickening of valve between left ventricle (chamber of heart that pumps the blood to the body) and aorta. This result in the narrowing of aortic valve that causes heart to work more forcefully in order to pump sufficient blood to the body.
Symptoms
Initially this condition is asymptomatic but as the disease worsen following symptoms are shown:
- Heart murmur
- Chest tightness and pain during hectic work.
- Problematic breathing on exertion
- Fainting and weakness
- Palpitations
- Loss of appetite due to which weight gain become hard (this is shown specially in children)
Causes
Causes include the following conditions:
- Congenital birth heart defect
- Aortic valve calcification
- Age related heart changes
- Rheumatic fever
Complications
Concerning complications are :
- Heart murmurs
- Heart rhythm defects
- Thrombosis
- Bleeding tendencies
- Stroke
- Infective endocarditis
Diagnosis
Firstly detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of patient is necessary. Other procedures for diagnoses include:
- Echocardiogram
- Electrocardiogram
- Cardiac MRI
- CT scan
- Cardiac catheterization
- Chest X-ray
- Exercise test
Treatment
- Mild to moderate condition don’t require immediate treatment. Just regular monitoring and medication for complications is prescribed.
- Aggravated condition requires surgeries like aortic valve repair, balloon valvuloplasty and aortic valve replacement.
