Metastasis Is define as when malignant cells spread from their primary site, when they spread to the bone then it is called bone metastasis. It is occurred in many types of cancer but mostly in breast and lung cancer metastasis to bones.

Symptoms

  • Fracture in bones
  • Pain
  • Urinary difficulties
  • Bowel problems
  • Hypercalcemia
  • Confusion
Causes

There are three routes of spread of cancer hematogenous, lymphatics and through the nearby tissue itself. It occurs when malignant cells break from their primary location and seeded into the bone.

Diagnosis

Diagnostic tests include:

  • Positron emission tomography
  • Blood test
  • X-ray
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Bone scan
  • Biopsy
Treatment

Treatment depend upon the site and severity of metastasis it includes:

  • Medications: drugs which reduce osteoporosis and increase the bone mass. Hormonal therapy also helps to suppress the bone destruction and prevent the fractures. Steroid help to control inflammation. Painkiller for pain.
  • Surgical option includes to repair the broken bone and stabilize the fractured bone. If metastasis involved the whole bone then it is better to remove the whole bone.
