Brachial plexus present between the neck and shoulder it supplies the nerves supply to the shoulder arm and hand. Brachial plexus injury includes the injury to this nerve plexus by compression, stretch or by some accident. Infection and inflammation also occur in the plexus which causes paralysis of whole arm and hand.

Causes

Injury occur when your force to stretched your shoulder forcefully. Some causes include:

  • Trauma
  • Difficult births
  • Contact sports
  • Tumors and surgical treatment
Complications

  • Pain
  • Muscles atrophy
  • Stiff joints
  • Numbness
  • Disability
  • Movement limitation
Diagnosis

For diagnosis your doctor may recommend the following tests:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to take the detailed images of affected area.
  • X-ray to check the extent of disease.
  • Nerve conduction test to check the function of test.
  • CT myelography
Treatment

Treatment depend upon the severity of compression and your overall health condition.

  • Surgical process includes neurolysis, nerve graft, muscle transfer etc.
  • Medication to control the pain and inflammation like pain killers and steroids respectively.
