Chronic headache refers to variety of headache for more than days. Chronic headache depends upon the duration and onset of headache in a particular episode. It is the most debilitating condition.

There can be long lasting or short lasting headaches. There are different types including chronic migraine, chronic tension-type headache, new daily persistent headache, hemicrania continua.

  • Chronic migraines presents as thrombing pain on one side or both of head, pain can be moderate to severe in intensity associated with nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound
  • Chronic tension-type presents as mild to moderate pain on both side of head. Pain is characterized as pressing pain
  • New daily-persistent headache presents as pressing mild to moderate pain on both sides of the head. It can have some features of chronic tension type or chronic migraines headaches.
  • Hemicrania continua presents as moderate pain with spikes of pain on only one side of the head, can be severe, it can respond to pain medications.
Causes

Primary headache have no exact cause. However, non-primary headache results from following causes:

  • Inflammation in blood vessels leading to stroke
  • Meningitis or other infections
  • Low or high intracranial pressure
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Tumors of brain
  • Over use of some medications
Complications
Diagnosis

Diagnosis of this condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of patient as well as neurological examination. Other imaging tests can also be suggested like MRI and CT scan.

Treatment

Main treatment strategy if prescribing the medications like antidepressants, beta blockers, Anti-seizure medications, NSAID and botulinum toxin.
