Chronic fatigue syndrome is a long standing condition that lasts for at least six months and is not justified by underlying medical condition.This condition is characterized by extreme fatigue.

Causes

There are studies that shows that there can be some genetic factor in the development of this condition. This can be triggered by following factors:

  • Viral infection
  • Problems of immune system
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Physical or emotional trauma

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of this condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of patient. Deep diagnoses is done according to the criteria proposed by States Institute of Medicine. It should be rule out that other conditions mimicking the syndrome are not there like sleep disorders, hypothyroidism, anemia, diabetes and depression or anxiety.

Treatment
  • Some medications are prescribed to treat depression, orthostatic intolerance, pain [pregabalin (Lyrica), duloxetine (Cymbalta), amitriptyline or gabapentin (Neurontin)].
