DELAYEDGASTRIC EMPTYING, GASTROPARESIS

Gastroparesis occurs when normal movement of smooth muscles in the stomach is affected and slowed down. It can be due to some medicines like antidepressants, opioids, medications for blood pressure and allergies because these medicines slow down the gastric motility.

Symptoms
  • Nausea and VomitingDELAYEDGASTRIC EMPTYING, GASTROPARESIS SYMPTOMS CAUSES TREATMENT
  • Feeling like stomach is full only after some bites
  • Low appetite
  • Reflux of acid
  • Flatulence
  • Pain in abdomen
  • Undigested food in vomiting that was eaten 2 3 hours earlier
  • Blood glucose levels change
  • Low weight and malnutrition
Causes

Gastroparesis can be due to damage to vagus nerve ( nerve which controls movement of muscles in stomach). Vagus nerve damage can be due to some diseases like diabetes, surgeries which involve small intestine or stomach.

Diagnosis
  • Gastric emptying study
  • Endoscopy of upper gastrointestinal tract
  • X-ray
  • Ultrasound
Treatment

If there is any underlying condition, treatment for it should be given first. Some medications and surgical procedures for gastroparesis are given below:

Medications
  • Muscle stimulators: erythromycin (Eryc, E.E.S.) metoclopramide (Reglan).
  • For nausea and vomiting: diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Unisom) and prochlorperazine (Compro)
Surgical treatment

A jejunostomy tube (feeding tube) can be used for relaying the pressure inside the stomach. These tubes can be passed through mouth, nose, or through skin. These are temporary and can be used when the condition is severe.
