It is defined as the continuous feeling of sadness and lack of interest in daily routine work. It is a mood disorder which affects your thinking, physical and emotional abilities. It is also called clinical depression.

Causes
As like other brain disorder depression is also a multi-factorial disease which is occur due to many factors which involved:
- Hormones change the body’s internal environment and may involve in the mood swings like depression occur after delivery or menopause or in thyroid gland diseases.
- Neurotransmitter which are called brain chemicals also involved in depression.
- Biological changes in brain physical structure also increase the risk of depression
- It is also run in families as inherited traits
Diagnosis

- Blood test to check the complete blood count
- Hormonal test to check the level of certain hormones
- DSM-5 criteria to diagnose the stage of depression

Treatment
Treatment option include medications and psychotherapy.

- Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors like venlafaxine and duloxetine.
- Selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors like citalopram and fluoxetine
- Tricyclic antidepressants like nefazodone and mirtazapine
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors like phenelzine and tranylcypromine
