It is a type of asthma that is induced by heavy exercise resulting in the inflammation of airway and breathing difficulties. This condition can preferably called as exercise-induced broncho-constriction. In this type of asthma exercise is regarded as a trigger of asthmatic attack.
Symptoms
Symptoms of exercise induced asthma are among the following:
- Frequent coughing
- Wheezing
- Problem in breathing
- Decrease in athletic performance
- Chest tightness
- Easy fatigability
Causes
The exact cause of this type of asthma is not known. However, many biological processes are thought to be involved. Some people’s experience increased in the mucus production after strenuous exercise which will impede in the breathing process.
Complications

- Decrease in the intensity of exercise which would otherwise be beneficial.
- People having unmanaged asthma could experience life threatening problems.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of this type of condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination. Other test and techniques involved in the diagnosis are as follows:
- Most commonly spirometry test is done to evaluate the function of the lungs.
- Exercise challenge test
- Inhalation test
- Conditions like asthma, vocal cord dysfunction, GERD can mimic the condition so it’s important to rule them out.
Treatment
Treatment of exercise induced asthma are as follows:
- Some medications are prescribed to be taken before exercise including short acting beta agonist and ipratropium.
- Some medications are prescribed to be taken for long term management of asthma including inhaled corticosteroids, leukotrienes modifier, combination inhalers having long acting beta agonist and corticosteroids.
