Hip Dysplasia

It is defined as the dislocated hip joint. Hip joint is formed by femur and hip bone, femur has a ball which fit in the socket of hip bone. Ball does not completely fit into the socket therefore they more easily dislocated. In young people it does not produce any severe sign and symptom.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms may vary person to person and age to age. In newborn who born with this condition this will be notice by difference in the length of both legs. Walking child may show this condition by their gait, limp gait. In adults and old people, it may cause severe pain.

Causes

During development, hip joint is made by soft bone which become hardens after calcification, ball must be sealed into socket of hip bone because they mold for each other if it not firmly sealed into the socket then socket become shallow.   • Breech presentation
  • Overweight baby
  • First pregnancy
Complications

If left untreated then it may lead to the joint’s disease called osteoarthritis.

Diagnosis

During pediatric visit your doctor may notice the change in the length of both legs of your, then doctor perform a physical examination to check the movement around the joint and recommend the x-ray of legs to check the deformity.

Treatment

Treatment depend upon the age and severity of dislocation which include:

  • In infants soft brace which hold the ball in the socket for several months might be helpful
  • In baby older than 6 months full body cast will be used
  • If these options will not work then surgical options include hip replacement surgery and periacetabular osteotomy cure the dislocation
