Latex Allergy

This kind of allergy results from the reaction of the body on exposure of a type of proteins found in rubber latex naturally.

Latex allergy can lead to the development of hives and inflammation of skin. Moreover, it can lead to life threatening condition known as anaphylaxis.

Symptoms

Symptoms of latex allergy can range from mild to severe signs as follows:Anaphylaxis,redness, itching, utricaria

  • Rashes and itching on skin
  • Inflammation and hives
  • Runny and itchy nose
  • Scratchy throat
  • Wheezing and problematic breathing
  • Coughing
  • Watery and redden eyes
  • Anaphylactic reaction in severe cases
Causes

Body recognizes latex as allergen then generate antibodies against that. This results in an immune reaction causing signs and symptoms. If you are exposed to latex more than one time it led to more powerful reaction each time. Reaction can occur through two ways:

  • Through direct contact with latex rubber like in gloves etc.
  • Through inhalation of latex particle release from gloves.
  • When come in contact with latex other skin conditions can also occur like allergic contact dermatitis and irritant contact dermatitis.
Diagnosis

Diagnosis starts with the complete family and past history and detailed physical examination. However, to diagnose latex allergy could be a challenge. Skin test and blood test can detect latex sensitivity.

Treatment
  • Oral medications like antihistamines and corticosteroids.
  • Epinephrine shots in cases of anaphylactic shock.
  • Acupuncture is sometimes considered as an option.
