Lichen Sclerosus
An infrequent condition characterized by patchy, white and thinner than the normal skin. Genitals and anal areas are usually affected. Postmenopausal women have relatively high risk of development of lichen sclrosus.
Symptoms
Symptoms of this condition include:
- Reddish appearance on skin
- Severe Itching
- Pain or discomfort
- Patches on skin which are smooth and white
- Painful sex
- Tearing
- Bleeding
- Blotchy and wrinkled patches
Causes
Main cause is unknown. However, an overactive immunity or imbalance of hormones have major role. This condition is not contagious and can’t spread through sexual intercourse.
Men and children can also become affected.
Complications
Complications of lichen sclerosus include:
- Pain during sex
- Retention of urine
- Constipation
- Nability to retract the foreskin
- Increased risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the affected area
Diagnosis
Diagnose of lichen sclerosus based on detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of the patient. Needle biopsy can also be suggested.
Treatment
Treatment options include:
- Medications like corticosteroids either oral or topical
- Circumcision in males
Home Remedies
- Apply moisturizer or lubricant in affected skin
- Gently wash the area and avoid harsh soaps and exfoliation
- Treat burning and pain with oatmeal and solutions
- Take oral antihistamines to avoid itching.
