Limited Scleroderma, Systemic Sclerosis
This condition is also called CREST syndrome. It is a subtype of scleroderma (hardened skin). This usually affects the skin of lower arms and legs mostly below elbows and knees. Sometimes face and neck can also become affected. Usually it’s not fatal and consequences are minor. But it can lead to serious complications if lungs and heart are involved.
Symptoms
Symptoms include:
- Shiny, tight and hardened skin
- Raynaud’s phenomena is seen in which skin turns white or blue when exposed to cold.
- Painless lines or red spots on skin
- Skin has developed bumps
- Difficulty in swallowing
Causes
Limited scleroderma main cause is unknown. However, studies shows that it is an autoimmune disease in which body’s own immune system attacks it’s own cells. As a result of this too much collagen is produce which leads to it’s accumulation in skin and internal organs limiting there normal function.
Complications
- Constipation, diarrhea or bloating
- Damage to the lungs due to collagen accumulation
- Arrhythmias and myocarditis
- Kidney damage
- Dental problems
- Dry mouth and eyes
Diagnosis
Diagnose of this condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of the patient. Other tests include:
- Blood test
- Skin biopsy
Treatment
Treatment options include:
- Medications like topical antibiotics, antacids, antihypertensive drugs, corticosteroids.
- Therapies like physical therapy and occupational therapy
- Surgery for painful joints and laser treatment for red spots
