Lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS) is rare condition which is characterized by the formation of abnormal developing cells in the lobules of breast. Although LCIS is a benign condition but it is a predisposing factor for the development of breast cancer.

Lobular carcinoma in situ  is asymptomatic. It is often diagnosed incidentally during a biopsy of some breast concerning areas.

Causes

Exact cause of this condition is not known. When lobules of breast undergone a genetic mutation it causes abnormal mitotic activity in the cells. These abnormal cells remain in lobules and doesn’t extend or invade other nearby tissues.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis occurs incidentally during biopsy as it is not detected on routine mammogram. Following types of biopsy may be used for diagnoses:

  • Core needle biopsy
  • Surgical biopsy
  • Needle biopsy
  • MRI is sometimes suggested.
Treatment

Treatment options include:

  • Observation carefully
  • Prevention by different medications to reduce cancer risk
  • Surgery
