Mammary Duct Ectasia

It is the define as the condition in which ducts beneath your nipples become widens and filled with fluid, ducts walls also become thicken. Widens ducts may become obstructed due to the accumulation of thick sticky substance. There may be no signs and symptoms generally but sometimes cause tenderness and inflammation.

Symptoms

  • Inverted nipple
  • Breast lump
  • Redness around nipple
  • Tenderness
  • White greenish or black discharge
Causes

The exact cause of the mammary duct ectasia is still not known yet but some causes included:

  • Smoking
  • Nipple inversion
  • Breast tissue changes due to aging process
Complications

Complications are rare and minor, which included:

  • Infection
  • Breast discomfort
  • Nipple discharge
  • Lump may confuse about malignancy
Diagnosis

Following tests may be helpful in diagnosis:

  • Mammography
  • Ultrasound of the nipple
  • Blood test
Treatment

Generally, it resolves on its own but sometime required treatment which include:

  • Pain reliever
  • Surgery
  • Antibiotics
