It is define as the inflammation of the lymph nodes which drained the mesentery of the abdominal wall. Mesenteric lymphadenitis occurs due to the viral infection called mesenteric adenitis. It mostly affects the children and adults.
Symptoms
signs and symptoms of mesenteric lymphadenitis include:
- Fever
- Abdominal tenderness
- Mesenteric lymph node enlargement
- Pain in lower right side of abdomen
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
Causes
Viral infection is the most common cause of mesenteric lymphadenitis which is also called stomach flu or gastroenteritis. The inflammation first occurs in the lymph nodes which drain the mesentery then infection spread in the whole mesentery.
Diagnosis
After taking medical history your doctor recommends the following tests to diagnosis the condition:
- Imaging test like CT scan and ultrasound of abdomen
- Blood test to check the infectious organism
Treatment
Mild Viral infection gone on its own after few days, full recovery required 3 to 4 weeks. There is symptomatic treatment is available for fever and pain like acetaminophen in children and ibuprofen. Avoid giving aspirin as it increases the risk of Reye’s syndrome.
