Mononucleosis
It is the viral infection cause by the Epstein bar virus which is transmitted through saliva, therefore it is also called kissing disease. But it is also spread by the use of contaminated utensil.
Symptoms
Below mention are the signs and symptoms of mononucleosis:
- Fever
- Swollen tonsils
- Headache
- Skin rash
- Soft swollen spleen
- Sore throat
- Fatigue
Causes
The main cause of this disease is the infection of the Epstein-Bar virus but other disease also causes similar symptoms. Some people immune to this virus and developed antibodies against this virus therefore they don’t developed mononucleosis.
Complications
If left untreated it may cause the following complications:
- Hepatitis
- Jaundice
- Anemia
- Thrombocytopenia
- Cardiovascular disease
- Tonsilitis
Diagnosis
After taking history and conducting a physical
examination your doctor might recommend
the following test to confirm the diagnosis:
- Blood test to check the antibody against the virus
- Blood complete count to check the anemia and white blood cell count
Treatment
There is no treatment option available for the viral infection, mild infection resolves on its own after few weeks. Antibiotics treat only bacterial infection and does not use for viral disease, symptomatic treatment includes:
- Antibiotics for skin rash and allergy.
- Treat secondary bacterial infection like tonsillitis by giving antibiotics
