This condition is also known as onychomycosis. Nail fungus is relatively a common condition which presents as white or yellow spot under the tip of toenail or fingernail. Nail become discolored, thick and crumble at edges as fungal infection goes deeper.

Causes

Although fungal infection of nails are caused by numerous fungi but most commonly it is caused by dermatophyte. Nail infection can also be caused by yeasts and molds. Mostly older people get nail infection. As in old age nails become brittle and cracks as a result of which fungus enter the nail and lead to infection. Weakened immunity and reduce blood supply in foot have also role in the infection.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of this condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of the patient. Examination of nail and taking scrape debris from under the nail is done for laboratory diagnosis. As other conditions like psoriasis can mimic fungal infection rulling out of other conditions is necessary for better treatment.

Treatment

Treatment options include the following:

  • Medications like Oral antifungal drugs, medicated nail polish, medicated nail cream are prescribed.
  • Surgery involve temporary nail removal but if infection is severe and intensely painful permanent removal of nail is done
