Nasal and Paranasal Tumors

These tumors are characterized by the appearance of abnormal growth that arises in and around the passage of nasal cavity. Paranasal tumors arises in the air-filled chambers around the nose called the paranasal sinuses while nasal tumors arises in the nasal cavity. These tumors are usually benign but can be cancerous.

Symptoms

Symptoms include:

  • Problematic breathing from nose
  • Reduce sense of smell
  • Bleeding from nose
  • Nasal discharge
  • Pain and swelling on face
  • Watery eyes
  • There could be a sore or lesions on the mouth’s roof
  • Lump in the neck
  • Visual problem
Causes

These tumors are usually begin when there is some genetic mutation in the DNA of healthy cells. This lead to abnormal and uncontrolled division of cells resulting in the accumulation of abnormal mass of cells forming tumor. This tumor can invade and spread to other nearby tissues if it’s cancerous.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of this type of tumor depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of the patient. Along with this endoscopic examination of the nasal cavity and sinuses using endoscopic camera is crucial.

  • Biopsy is done for laboratory diagnosis
  • CT scan and MRI are also done
Treatment

Treatment options include:

  • Surgery to remove the tumor. Surgery could be open surgery, minimally invasive surgery.
  • Radiation therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Palliative care
