Ocular Rosacea

Ocular rosacea is condition characterized by  inflammation eye resulting in the redness, itching and burning of eye. It is mostly accompanied by a medical condition known as rosacea ( skin condition that affects the face ).

  • Eyes become red, burning and itchy
  • Dry eye
  • Feeling of foreign body in the eye
  • Blurred vision
  • Photophobia
  • Dilated small blood vessels visible on the white part of the eye
  • Conjunctivitis
Causes

Exact cause of this condition is not known. Following factors are thought to play role:

  • Heredity factors
  • Environmental factors
  • Eyelash mites
  • Blocking eyelid or lacrimal glands of eye
  • Bacterial involvement
  • Factors that aggravate facial rosacea can also play role in the appearance of ocular rosacea. For example: Hot or spicy foods or beverages, alcohol, sunlight, wind or temperature extremes
Complications
  • Inflammation of eyelid
  • Affects on cornea leading to dry eyes
  • Secondary irritation of cornea due to misdirected eyelashes
  • Vision loss
Diagnosis

Diagnosis of this condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of the patient. No other tests are required.

Treatment

Treatment options include mainly home care and some medications.

  • Medications include tetracycline, doxycycline, erythromycin and minocycline ( oral antibiotics )
Home Remedies
  • Keep eyelashes clean by washing it with warm water
  • Avoid contact lens use when symptoms appear
  • For dry eyes use artificial tears
  • Avoid maked when eyes are inflamed
