Oral Lichen Planus

Oral lichen is the most common inflammatory condition which damages the  mucosal membrane especially of mouth . Visual symptoms may include white,lacy patches,and swallon tissues. It is an autoimmune disorder in which body defence system work against the mucous membrane of mouth. It is not contagious.

Symptoms

  • White, raised, lacy patches of tissues
  • Open sores
  • Patches are tender and red
  • Most common locations are gum, tongue, palate
  • Pain of burning type
  • Discomfort during swallowing and chewing
  • Gingivitis
  • Sensitivity of acidic food.
  • These lesions can occur in other areas also like genitals, scalp, ears, nails and eyes
Causes

Exact cause of this condition is not known however, studies shows that T lymphocytes appear to have some role in pathogenesis. These lymphocytes are overly activated which result in the attack of own body cells. Many factors plays role in autoimmunity like genetic factors, allergy-causing agents, mouth injury.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of this condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of the patient. Other tests include

  • Biopsy
  • Culture of the sample cells of the mouth
  • Blood tests
Treatment

Treatment options include:

  • Topical numbing agent for relieving the pain
  • Corticosteroids for reducing inflammation
  • Immune response medications in the form of topical ointments or gels, or systematic medication
 Home remedies
  • Keeping good oral hygiene
  • Reducing the intake of spicy food
  • Avoid consuming irritants
