Oral Thrush, Oral Candida

It is the fungus infection of lining of oral cavity. It is known as candidiasis because it is occurred due to the infection of candida albicans.

Symptoms

  • Redness in oral cavity
  • Burning sensation
  • Creamy white patches on tongue, inner cheeks and roof and floor of moth
  • Bleeding if patches are scratches
  • Loss of taste

Causes

Normal there is group of bacteria and fungi live inside the body as a normal flora of the body. The common causes of oral thrush are candida albicans which are normally present in vaginal canal but in oral cavity it causes thrush.

Complications

Complications are mostly seen with low immunity individual. They got viral disease easily like HIV and herpes virus infect them more.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is done through:

  • Oral examination to see the patches and other conditions of mouth.
  • Biopsy by taking small piece of white patches to differentiate from leukoplakia.
  • Endoscopy
Treatment

The main aim of treatment is to treat the lesion and prevent the spread of infection and complications, treatment options include:

  • Anti-fungal medications like ketoconazole, fluconazole etc.
  • Anti-fungal topical creams
  • Broad-spectrum anti-fungal for low immunity persons by IV.

  • Maintain a good oral hygiene.
  • Take warm water
  • Rinse mouth with saltwater
  • Avoid spicy food
  • Stop smoking
