Peanut Allergy

 Most common cases of allergic attack is due to peanuts. Even small quantity of peanut can lead to anaphylactic reaction.

Causes

Main cause is the development of antibodies against peanuts. Body consider peanuts as allergen and when peanut is consumed a severe allergic reaction occur in body. Triggering of allergic reaction can be due to direct contact of peanut containing food or consumption of food unintendedly having peanuts. Sometimes inhalation of peanuts in the air from peanut oil spray or peanut floor can trigger allergic reaction.

Sometimes anaphylaxis can result which is a serious life-threatening condition characterized by unconsciousness, increase pulse, swollen throat and inability to breath.

Diagnosis

Firstly, a detailed history of patient and complete general physical examination is needed for diagnosis. Other methods are;

  • Skin test to determine particular potential allergen.
  • Blood test detecting antibodies.
  • Elimination of diet therapy.
Treatment
  • Oral therapy.
  • Antihistamines for easing the symptoms.
  • Epinephrine autoinjector in cases of anaphylaxis.
Home Remedies
  • Carry your autoinjector with you in case of unexpected exposure.
  • Avoid taking food in which there is doubt of having peanuts.
  • Always read label of food before purchasing any food and don’t just assume.
