It is defined as the infection of the female reproductive tract. It is commonly occurred due to sexually transmitted bacteria from vagina to uterus or ovaries.
Symptoms
Signs and symptoms include:
- Painful urination
- Pain during intercourse
- Fever
- Abnormal uterine bleeding
- Heavy vaginal discharge
Causes
There are many bacteria which cause PID most common are gonorrhea and chlamydia in sexually active women. Less common causes are intrauterine device or long-term birth control medications.
Diagnosis
After taking history your doctor might recommend the following tests:
- Pelvic examination to check any physical abnormality
- Blood test to check infectious organism
- Urine culture
- Ultrasound of uterus to check the extend of disease
Treatment
Treatment options include:
- Avoid sexual intercourse until disease is cured.
- Antibiotics to treat the bacterial infection
- Treat your partner to prevent reinfection
