Residual Limb Pain

This condition is also known as stump pain. It is characterized by pain in the parts of limbs after amputation. This usually occur after surgery within first week.

Symptoms
  • Throbbing and pressing of pain
  • Burning, squeezing and stabbing sensation
  • Sudden and involuntary movements in a significant way
Causes

Main causes of this condition are diseases in bone or soft tissues, infections, disturbed blood supply, tumors or use of prosthesis.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of this condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of the patient. Other tests include blood tests and imaging tests include MRI, CT scan, X-rays or ultrasound.

Treatment

Treatment options include:

  • Medications like painkillers, antidepressants, anticonvulsants andN-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) agonists.
  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Hypnosis sessions
  • Massage to relieve pain
  • Neuromodulation
