It is defined as the disease in which wall of the arteries which are present in the heart become damage. Small vessel disease produces chest pain like symptoms which mimic the angina pectoris. It is also known as coronary microvascular disease. Women are more prone to this condition. Risk factors including diabetes and hypertension.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms include:Hardening of vessels , Arteriosclerosis

  • Breathing difficulty
  • Fatigue
  • Discomfort in chest
  • Pain which mimic the angina pain
Causes

The exact cause of this condition is not yet found but there are many diseases which increase the risk of small vessels disease like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and other cardiac myopathies.

Diagnosis

After taking history your doctor conducts a physical examination to rule out the other causes of sign and symptoms, he/she might recommend the following tests:

  • Coronary angiogram to check the condition of arteries.
  • Stress test to check the heart rate after exertion.
  • Ct scan and MRI to see the detail image of heart.
Treatment

Treatment options include:

  • Statins to reduce the cholesterol synthesis.
  • Beta blockers to slow the heart rate.
  • Calcium channel blockers to relaxed the arteries
  • Nitroglycerin to relax the coronary arteries
  • Aspirin to reduce the inflammation
  • Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors to reduce the obliteration of vessels.
