Transient Global Amnesia

It is defined as the acute sudden temporary loss of memory which lasts long for 1-2 hours. It is not included in neurological disorders like stroke and seizures. It mostly affects the people in their second or third decade.

Symptoms

The main symptoms of transient global amnesia are difficulty in making new memories. Following are some signs and symptoms of this disorder:

  • Impaired word recognition
  • Sudden memory loss
  • Remembrance of self identify
  • Recognize the family members and daily use
  • The gradual return of memory
  • No history of injury
  • No history of seizure
Causes

There are only possible causes of transient global amnesia is known. Exact causes of this disorder are still under study.

Some stimulus which triggers it include:

  • Bath with cold or hot water
  • Intense physical activity
  • Sexual acitvity
  • Medical procedure like x-ray or endoscopy
  • Emotional stress
  • Trauma to head
Complications

There is no complications of epilepsy(seizures) or stroke due to this condition. You experience emotional trauma in your social circle otherwise no any serious complications associated with it.

Diagnosis

Transeint global amnesia is necessary to diagnosis to rule out the other severe conditions like stroke epilepsy which cause the same type of signs and symptoms.

Diagnostic test includes:

  • Imaging tests. Like MRI EEG and CT scan of bain to check any abnormality in the brain substances.
  • Physical examination. To check the reflexes, power, strength and tone of muscular system.
Treatment

There is no any specific treatment available for transient global amnesia. Generally patient recover on it own after the sudden attack
