Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis)

It is the fungal infection that occurs between the toes. It usually occurs in people who wore tight fitting shoes and have increase sweating at feet.

It is a transmitted through the contaminated fomites and sweating of infected individual.

  • Itching at affected area
  • Rash
  • Eczema
  • Blisters formation
  • Ulcer
Causes

It is the fungal infection which is cause by the same fungus which also cause ringworm and jock itch. Sweating provide the humid environment for the growth of fungus.

Complications

If left untreated it may cause the following complications:

  • The infection spread to hands due to scratching with hands
  • Infection may also spread to the groin
  • Nails also infected with fungal infection
Diagnosis

During clinical check-up your doctor diagnosis the athelet’s feet by only looking at the lesion. To rule out the other conditions which cause the same lesion your doctor might take the skin sample for laboratory testing.

Treatment

It is the fungal infection so antifungal therapy is the first-line treatment of athlete’s foot. They available in topical, powder and in part form. Systemic antifungal also given in severe condition.

  • Dry your feet after bath
  • Wash your socks daily
  • Wear ventilated shoes
  • Avoid sharing of shoes
  • Avoid using public bathroom for bath
  • Protect your feet from toxicity of environment.
