It is type of cancer which is occur in the basal cells of the skin which is present in the basal layer of your skin. The function of basal layer to produce new cells when old cells die. Basal carcinoma occurs due to the heavy exposure of sun light which causes damage to the skin.

Symptoms

  • Waxy scar like lesion
  • Brown blue and black color lesion
  • Reddish scaly patch
  • Pearly white to pink skin bump

Causes

The main cause of basal cell carcinoma is mutation which changes the DNA a cell machinery which perform the normal function of the cells. Basal layer is the outermost layer of skin therefore it is more prone to exposed to UV radiation present in the sunlight. Fair skin people are at high risk to developed basal cell carcinoma if exposed to sunrays chronically.

Complications

If left untreated it may cause the following complications:

  • Spread of cancer(metastasize)
  • Increase risk of other type of cancer
  • Recurrence of cancer

Diagnosis

For diagnosis your doctor may take a medical and family history and may recommend a biopsy of your skin lesion to evaluate the other condition which causes the same symptoms.

Treatment

The aim of cancer treatment is to eliminate it before they spread to other location in the body. Treatment option depend on the stage of cancer and your overall health condition which include:

  • Mohs surgery to remove the whole basal layer and check each layer for the abnormal cells.
  • Surgical excision of abnormal layer and surrounding health cells to prevent the risk of metastasize.
  • Radiation therapy to kill the cancerous cells.
  • Topical treatment to reduce the symptoms.
