Geographic Tongue
It is an inflammatory condition of the anterior surface of the tongue. Tongue is covered with papillae which is define as hair like projection pink or white in color. In geographical tongue papillae are abolished and tongue surface appeared as smooth reddish in color. Red color patches may present on the tongue which give the map like appearance therefore it is known as geographical tongue.
Symptoms
Below mention are the signs and symptoms of geographical tongue:
- Red patches on the surface of the tongue
- Pain
- Burning sensation
- Spicy food cause discomfort
- Size and location of lesion may change frequently
Causes
The exact cause of the geographical tongue is still not known yet but it may be assumed that it may be linked with psoriasis and lichen planus condition of skin.
Complications
It is a harmless benign condition which does not cause any serious complication but may cause anxiety and embarrassing condition due to its appearance.
Diagnosis
Your doctor may diagnosis the geographical tongue by looking at them during the physical examination of oral cavity. During the examination your doctor might check the position of lesion and palpate the tongue to check the tenderness and check the lymph nodes for any palpable mass.
Treatment
It is a harmless condition and usually resolve on its own but sometime it causes pain and required treatment which include:
- Vitamin supplements
- Steroids ointments
- Pain relievers
- Antihistamine mouth wash
Lifestyle and Home Remedies
You may reduce the pain and burning sensation by avoiding the spicy foods and smoking. Keep the mouth clean and use mouth wash 2-3 times a day.
