Lipoma

Lipoma is a fatty lump which is usually slow growing present between skin and underlying muscles. It feels like doughy and is not tender. It moves readily with slight pressure of finger.

Symptoms

  • Common locations are neck, shoulders, back, abdomen, arms and thighs.
  • Consistency is dough like.
  • Generally 2 inch in diameter but they can grow.
  • Can be painful if they are large enough to press nearby vessels and nerves.
Causes

Main cause of this condition is not known. However, genetic factor is thought to play role as lipoma runs in families.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of this condition depends upon detailed medical history and complete general physical examination of the patient. Other tests include:

  • Biopsy for laboratory examination
  • X-ray, MRI or CT scan
Treatment

Treatment options include:

  • Surgical removal of the lump
