MCAD Deficiency

It is defining as the hereditary condition in which there is lack of enzyme called Medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency which is necessary to break down fats in your body and convert them into energy due to lack of this enzyme you are at risk of hypoglycemia due to low blood sugar level.


Signs and symptoms include:

  • Low blood sugar
  • Vomiting
  • Lack of energy
  • Diarrhea
  • Increase exercise
  • Significant stress
  • Viral infections
  • Fever

It is the hereditary disorder which is transmitted in children by parents. The cause of enzyme deficiency is the mutation in the gene which is required for the synthesis of this enzyme.

Diagnostic test for MCAD deficiency includes:

  • Genetic testing to confirm the genetic mutation
  • Newborn screening

There is no specific medicine for this condition. The main goal of treatment is to control the signs and symptoms and prevent the complications like avoid fasting to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia.
