It is the brain and spinal cord disease which is potentially disable disease. In multiple sclerosis there is a destruction of myelin sheath, the function of myelin sheath is to cover the nerves fiber and provide insulation.
Symptoms
Signs and symptoms include:
- Numbness
- Weakness in muscles
- Vision loss
- Blurry vision
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Slurred speech
- Tremors
Causes
The exact cause of multiple sclerosis is still not known but it may be considered that auto-antibodies form in body which attack the own tissues.
Complications
If left untreated it may cause the following complications:
- Epilepsy
- Depression
- Mental changes
- Sexual problem
- Problem with bladder
- Paralysis
Diagnosis
After taking history your doctor might recommend the following test:
- Lumbar puncture to check the presence of any organism
- Blood tests to check complete blood count and autoantibody
- MRI to see detailed images brain and spinal cord
Treatment
There Is no specific treatment available for multiple Sclerosis, following treatment options available to reduce signs and symptoms:
- Plasmapheresis to separate the plasma from blood
- Corticosteroids to reduce the inflammation
- Medications to block the immune system
- Physical therapy
