It is defined as the infection of gum which damage the soft tissue and if left untreated it may cause the destruction of bones and then tooth loss.
Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of periodontitis include:
- Gums bleeding
- Bad breath
- Pus
- Purplish gums
- Swollen gums
- Painful chewing
Causes
There are many causes of gums infection some of them are mention below:
- Plaque which causes gingivitis
- Calculus
- Plaque form on your teeth
- Any inflammatory disorder of periodontitis
Diagnosis
Diagnostic tests include:
- Dental x-ray may help to check the extend of disease.
- Medical history
- Detailed examination of mouth
Treatment
The first line treatment for periodontitis is dental hygienist perform by dentist. Other options include:
- Scaling
- Root planning
- Antibiotic to treat secondary infection
- Soft tissue graft if tissue destruction occurs
- Flap surgery
