It is inherited condition in which cysts formation occur in your kidneys which increase the size of kidneys therefore impair the function of kidneys. Cysts are fluid filled sacs which are nonmalignant. The size of cysts may range from small to large.
Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of Polycystic kidney disease include:
- Urinary tract infections
- Kidney failure
- Urolithiasis
- Headaches
- High blood pressure
- Back pain
- Hematuria
Causes
The exact cause of this condition is still unknown but there is assumption that mutation in the certain genes cause this disease. There are two variants of this disease present autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive. Dominant type often occurs in adults and recessive type occur mostly just after birth
Complications
If left untreated it may cause the following complications:
- Chronic severe back pain
- Cysts developed in your liver
- High blood pressure
- Acute kidney failure
- Pregnancy problem due to HTN
Diagnosis
After taking history your doctor will recommend the following diagnostic tests which included:
- Kidney function test to check any hormonal disfunction
- Imaging test to check the detailed kidney images
- Blood test to check any serum abnormality
- CT (Computerized Tomography) scan
Treatment
Treatment depends upon the number and size of cysts; one or more cystdoes not require any specific treatment. Treatment options included:
- Drain the cysts through syringe
- Surgical removal of cysts
- Antibiotics for infected cysts
- Pain killer
- Medicine to control the high blood pressure
