It is a condition of high blood pressure which is occur during pregnancy. It is the complications of pregnancy which affect the liver the kidneys and occur after 5th months of pregnancy. It can cause serious complications if left untreated.

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Decrease urine output
  • Abdominal pain
  • Blurred vision
  • Protein in urine
  • Migraine
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Disturbed liver function
Causes

The main cause of preeclampsia is still unknown but different theories suggest that it is originated from the placenta due to the development of the new blood vessels following causes include in the abnormal development:

  • Genetic inheritance
  • Defected immune system
  • Trauma to blood vessel
  • Decrease blood flow to the uterus
Diagnosis

After taking history and conducting physical examination your doctor recommends the following tests:

  • Visual acuity test
  • Chest x-ray to check any lung abnormality
  • Urinary analysis
  • Liver function test
  • Fetal ultrasound
  • Blood test to check the complete blood count
Treatment

Preeclampsia is usually resolve after delivery but if your symptoms are severe and make you feel ill then following treatment options include:

  • Medications to lower the blood pressure
  • Corticosteroids to improve liver function
  • Bed rest to provide sufficient blood to uterus
  • Antiseizure medications to prevent seizure
