It is defined as the chronic disease which damage the bile ducts, present in the liver. It is also known as primary biliary cirrhosis. Bile is producing in liver and stored in gallbladder the function of bile is to help in digestion of food and remove extra cholesterol from the body.
Symptoms
Signs and symptoms usually arise later in disease which include:
- Pain in upper abdomen
- Fatigue
- Musculoskeletal pain
- Splenomegaly
- Itchy skin
- Dry eyes
- Xanthomas
- Osteoporosis
- Jaundice
- Hypothyroidism
- Diarrhea
Causes
The exact cause of this condition is still unknown but it may be assumed that certain autoimmune condition predisposes this condition and activate T-lymphocytes to destroy the bile duct cells.

- Test to check any antibody against the body own cells
- Liver function test to check the function of liver
- Cholesterol level
- Blood test to check the complete blood count
- Ultrasound to check the images of liver
Treatment
There are no specific treatment options available for this disease. Following treatment will reduce the signs and symptoms:
- Fibrates to reduce the inflammation and itching
- Ursodeoxycholic acid to improve function of liver and prevent scarring
- Obeticholic acid help to improve liver function
- Liver transplant
- Antihistamine to prevent itching
- Opioid antagonist to decrease itching
