It is defined as the cancer of prostate gland which is located just below the bladder. Prostate secretion also makes the semen and nourished the sperms. It is the most common type of cancer in men after lung cancer. Sometime they produce signs and symptoms and sometime they remain silent for many years.

Causes

The exact cause of the prostate cancer is still unknown but it may be assumed that mutations in the cell’s DNA may cause the cancerous growth of the prostate gland. Abnormal cells also have the potential to metastasize the nearby tissues and organ.

Diagnosis

After taking history about signs and symptoms and conducting physical examination your doctor might recommend the following tests:

  • Blood test to check the complete blood count
  • Digital rectal examination to check any physical abnormality
  • PSA test to check the prostate specific antigen in the blood
  • Ultrasound to check the extend of disease
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to see the images
  • Biopsy to rule out the other causes
Treatment

Treatment depends upon the severity of condition if severe signs and symptoms are present then prompt treatment may be needed, treatment options include:

  • Surgical process include prostatectomy to remove the prostate gland
  • Radiotherapy to destroy the cancer cells
  • Cryotherapy to freeze the cancerous cell to prevent the metastasize
  • Medication to treat the symptoms
  • Immunotherapy to suppress the overactive immune system
  • Chemotherapy to damage the abnormal cells
