Septic Arthritis
It is an infectious condition which is cause by the some organism which is entered through the blood. It causes painful infection around the joint. Old people and children usually got this infection. Septic arthritis affects the many joints in the body but mainly knee joint is more prone to affected.
Symptoms
The main symptoms of septic arthritis is pain
and swelling at the joint. Movement at that
joint is also limited, fever is also present
due to the inflammation.
Causes
It is caused by the viral, bacterial, and fungal infections. Staphylococcus aureus is the most common organism to cause septic arthritis. Staph aureus usually found at healthy skin but any penetrative lesion give the portal to enter into the body. Urinary tract may also provide the route for many bacteria to enter into the body.
Complications
If left untreated, it can causes the permanent damage and degeneration of joint.
Diagnosis
Your doctor may recommend the following test to diagnose septic arthritis:
- Blood tests. To check the infectious cause.
- Joint fluid examination to check the condition of synovial fluid and presence of causative organism
- X-rays to check the extent of disease
Treatment
Treatment options include the drainage of pus around the joint and antibiotic to treat the infection.
Medication. Antibiotics to treat the bacterial infection
Drainge through the needle and by open surgery may also reduce the inflammation and swelling.
