Shaken Baby Syndrome
The condition in which there is brain injury occurred due to any head trauma or shaken the baby vigorously. Shaken baby syndrome also causes by abusive head trauma and forcefully shaken the head of baby or toddler.
Symptoms
Below mention are the signs and symptoms of shaken baby syndrome:
- Paralysis
- Vomiting
- Seizures
- Poor eating
- Cyanosis
- Breathing problems
- Irritability
- Excessive crying
- Coma or sudden death
Causes
Babies have poor neck control due to weakly developed neck muscles in early development so therefore they have poor support to head. Baby brain is fragile also and serious damaged can occurred due to forcefully shaken the baby’s head or any traumatic head abuse.
Diagnosis
After taking history and conducting physical examination your doctor might recommend the following tests:
- Eye examination to check any abnormality
- MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to check the extent of disease
- Blood test to check the any other causes
- Skeletal examination through X-ray to check any fracture of bone
Treatment
Treatment depends upon the severity of damage, treatment options include:
- Oxygen support for breathing problem
- Give vitamin K to stop bleeding
- Surgical process to stop bleeding if needed
