Cervicitis
It is defined as the inflammation of the cervix which is the narrow lower portion of uterus when open into vagina. It is mostly occurred due to sexually transmitted bacteria like gonorrhea and chlamydia.
Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of cervicitis include:
- Pain during intercourse
- Vaginal discharge
- Painful urination
- Vaginal bleeding
Causes
General causes of cervictis include:
- Allergic reaction due to contraceptive use or due to condom.
- Sexually transmitted infections
- Bacterial overgrowth which also cause bacterial vaginosis
Complications
It can lead to the spread of infection to the uterus and pelvis.
Diagnosis
Your doctor might recommend the following test to diagnosis the cause:
- Physical examination of pelvic to check the signs of inflammation and tenderness.
- Laboratory test of vaginal fluid which show the clue cells, which is diagnostic characteristic of bacterial vaginosis.
- Blood test to rule out the other causes of infection.
- Check the pH of vaginal fluid.
Treatment
Treatment depend upon the causes of inflammation, if it occurs due to allergy you should avoid using certain contraceptives and condoms. If inflammation occur due to bacterial infection your doctor might recommend the antibiotic course for 1-2 weeks to prevent the complications and resolve the infection.
